Inkling by Kenneth Oppel

Inkling by Kenneth Oppel is a fictional book set in the present about a family that is facing troubles in school and at work. The son of Mr. Rylance, Ethan, is the artist for a group project with his friends because his dad is an artist, but he isn’t a very good artist and can only draw stick men. While his dad might be an artist, he hasn’t drawn anything in a very long period of time, due to him not having any ideas and him being very sad from his wife’s death. Then one night, a “strange” creature appears, which has the potential to help Ethan and his dad with all the trouble they are facing.

This book reminds me of a book called “Wizard for Hire”, where two people that start off without knowing anything about each other end up being friends. Most kids can relate to this book because it shows that you might be chosen to do something in a group project because your family is good at it, but you might not be good at doing it. Other people can relate to losing family members at a young age. My favorite character is Inkling.

Recess Warriors: Bad Guy is a Two-Word Word by Marcus Emerson is about two kids who get into crazy adventures at school with  werewolves, vampires, cowboys, and pirates. The playground becomes a war zone and dodge ball becomes war. The two heroes, Yoshi and Clinton try to save the day, but can't always help. Some crazy things happen. There's a cowboy who stays in a room hidden in the school, and whoever is IT for freeze tag turns into ice. Will they try to unite to defeat the villain named the Jinx and her boss Simon? Also you’ll want to know why everyone does what Simon says.

I like this book because I like graphic novels. This is a book in a series. I hope you like it.

Terrible Two by Mac Barnett and Jory John

The Terrible Two by Jory John and Mac Barnett is about a boy named Miles who moves to a new town called Yawnee Valley. It begins as a normal story but then it tells us about his old school and how he was the school's big prankster. It also tells about how miserable Miles was to move to a new town. 

My most favorite character in this book is principal Barkin. He is my favorite because he is an angry man who always has something crazy he gets himself into. I also like the part where the principal parked on the stairs and made all the students go into the school through his car to get in.

This book reminds me of the times I had to move and it was hard because I had so many memories from there. The hardest part was not being able to see my friends because we were in different cities. I would always be very silent and shy. Then I got used to the school and I'm not as shy as I was before and now have a lot of friends who I can relate to, which makes me more comfortable.

Terrible Two by Mac Barnett  is about a boy named Miles. In his old school, he was known as a pranking legend. Now that he’s moving to boring Yawnee Valley, he hopes to be his new school’s prankster there. But there’s already a prankster, and he’s REALLY good.

I can really relate to Miles in this book. I LOVE to prank my sister, and…. I sometimes get pranked myself. I hope you will like the book.

Dork Diaries: tales from a not-so-perfect pet sitter is by Rachel Renee Russell. My book is about a girl who is named Nikki. She gets bullied by Mackenzie Hochstetter. Mackenzie is a pitch perfect designer. Nikki has a crush on a boy named Brandon. Every time she tries to get him to be her boyfriend she gets sick. . One day she found a box with a dog in it. She decided to take the dog. The dog’s name is Daisy. Daisy the dog had puppies. The mom will only let her have one. Which  dog will she choose ???

I like Dork diaries. The book is cool and it pulls you in as you read. Read the whole series, it changes your life.

Auggie and Me by R.J. Palacio

I like Auggie and Me by R.J. Palacio very much for certain reasons. This book makes me feel like a better person just from reading it. Just treat people the way you want to be treated. In this book, this child named Julian is a very mean child and he bullied a child named Auggie. Auggie had disabilities and did not look like other children, but he was a very kind person. This book reminds me of a movie named a Wrinkle in Time because in the movie this person bullies another person for no reason, just like the book Auggie and Me. You should not do something bad, especially if there is no reason to do it.

Auggie and Me has things that will hurt other kids feelings but there is a lesson to learn. I think that you should treat people the way you would like to be treated. When I read this book it makes me feel like a better person. This book talks about very important things that maybe you will like to learn about to. This book shows hard feelings and maybe will hurt other feelings but is a good lesson to learn, this book is very good and I think that you should read it too.

The Baby Sitters Club Kristy Ann Saves The Day by Raina Telgemeier

The Baby Sitters Club: Kristy Ann Saves The Day by Raina Telgemeier based on the novel by Ann M. Martin, is about a babysitters club who were all best friends and then got into a fight. It takes place in a school, and in a bunch of different houses. When they got in a fight they didn't speak for a very long time but they didn't want anybody to think anything was suspicious, so they acted like they were not in a fight. At the end they ended up adding a new member to the group named Dawn. She was a very nice girl who loved kids.

 I like this book because it is interesting and a very good book, I really enjoyed reading this book. My favorite part of the book was when they got back to being best friends. I think in conclusion that this is an amazing graphic novel and is one of a series of books.

The Losers Club by Andrew Clements

The Losers Club by Andrew Clements is about a sixth grader named Alec Spencer who is in trouble again at school.... FOR READING! Yes, Alec is a sneaky reader, every time a teacher has his back turned, or her attention on something else, Alec has a book open on his lap and he is not paying attention in class. This time his parents have had enough, so he must promise to pay attention and stop reading in school, and since this is the start of a new school year, Alec does try to turn it around. At least he can read in peace during the after school program, when he starts his own reading club. He ingeniously names it the "Losers Club" hoping the name will keep anyone else from joining. Except he does need at least one other person to join in order to start his club, and that turns out to be Nina Warner. Nina is pretty and nice, and most importantly loves to read. But the school jock calls Alec "bookworm" and he seems to like Nina too. Then to make things worse, other kids start joining the club!

Clements is a great author for school stories. In The Losers Club he does a great job of capturing those first feelings of interest in girl/boy relationships. He also will give you a terrific list of books to read as Alec and his reading buddies talk about the titles they love. I hope you enjoy this RICBA Nominee for 2019.

Sidetracked by Diana Harmon Asher

Sidetracked by Diana Harmon Asher is a Rhode Island Children's Book Award Nominee for 2019.  Joseph, is a student who has difficulty paying attention in school. He is in 7th grade and has trouble making friends because he is different. His resource teacher Mrs. T. encourages him to sign up for the track team. A new girl in school, Heather joins the team too. Together they face the rigors of preparing for a competitive sport and the bullies that seem to dominate in all schools.

Oh wow! I loved this book. The characters are so likable, and well developed by the author that you will feel you know Joseph and Heather. Joseph has Attention Deficit Disorder and Asher seems to know just what it is like to be easily distracted. Full of humor and heart, this is an excellent read aloud for the start of school. This book encourages empathy, a respect for differences, and an understanding of what it is like to struggle to succeed. A great "do your best" lesson.

The Detention Club by David Yoo

In The Detention Club by David Yoo, Peter and his friend Drew try to get popular.  They have many failed attempts and his sister always mocks him.  Peter’s sister Sunny is like the queen of the school. She is also very smart.  They have a very bad relationship and when they take T.A.G class together, Peter thought of a great invention.  Everyone was expecting Sunny to win like always, but what you find out next is shocking.  When Peter finds out there is a school thief on the loose he takes advantage to try to get popular again.  Once you find out who the school thief is, you will be flabbergasted.  Who do you think the thief is?  Will Peter’s plan work?  Do you think Peter and Drew are going to get popular?

I love how the author made this book a very funny book.  I may not love reading but this was a very great book and made me want to read more.  It was very funny and very suspenseful.  This book is full of joy, excitement, and anger.  This book can also be relatable to people like me. I am a great collector and I love to show people my findings.  This book is great book and I recommend you read it.

Real Friends by Shannon Hale and Leuyen Pham

The book Real Friends is a really good book. The authors are Shannon Hale and Leuyen Pham. It is about a girl who doesn't want to go to school because she did not know anybody. Read to find out what happens next. Will she go in to school or stay home with her mom? I hope you like it. It’s really good.

I like this book because it tells you what real friends are about. I love how it has a lot of detail and information. It actually reminds me of when I went to this school and did not know anyone. That is what I like about this book.

In The Elementia Chronicles : Book Two, The New Order by Sean Fry Wolfe, the plot or problem is that there is a bad group of people who keep attacking the city where everybody lives. The group is mad because the lower level players are also in the city. They're more powerful and they want to kick them out.

My book reminds me of my old school, where if you were new you could not hang out with certain people, which was dumb. One time the older students that had been there longer, beat up the newer kids. I was one of the new kids. Read this book to find out what happens.

Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life by James Patterson

The plot of Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life by James Patterson, is about a boy named Rafe Khatchadorian. Rafe is going through middle school, which as you can tell by the title does not go very well for him.  Rafe is a very artistic kid that was born into a family with an annoying, nosey sister named Georgia, a loving and caring mom named Jules, and a mean, nasty, and sloppy dad that he calls Bear. Rafe has a plan that is an acronym for Rafe (rules aren't for everyone). Rafe’s plan is to try to break every rule in one year. Will he be able to do it or will he fail?

I loved this book. I really like the author’s imagination, and the outrageous characters. When reading the book you should really take your time to understand the characters and look at the pictures. Most readers will be around middle school age, but they will still find how true and funny this book is. If I had to rate this book I would give it a good 9, because although it's an amazing book, like any book it has its’ flaws, but those flaws are really tiny and you should still read the book.

School’s Out by Johanna Hurwitz

The book School’s Out by Johanna Hurwitz is about how to take care of your siblings and care for them and help them. During summer vacation a kid named Lucas and his babysitter named Geniveive have to watch Lucas’s brothers named Marius and Marcus. One time both Marius and Marcus stepped in a container of paint and when they got out of the paint, the paint got all over the grass in the lawn. Afterwards the brother’s got inside and Lucas gave them a bath. One time Marius climbed under the seats at the movie and Lucas and Genevieve had to find Marius. Lucas had to climb under the seats and one time Lucas grabbed a random person's leg.    

I think this book is realistic because I have to take care of my siblings too. I also play games like football with my brothers. In the morning I help my brother get breakfast. I also help my brother put his jacket, gloves, and hat on in the morning.

In Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson, Astrid and her best friend Nicole did everything together, until one summer Astrid’s mom took Astrid and Nicole to a roller derby game. Astrid fell in love with roller derby. That summer Astrid just assumed that she and Nicole would go to roller derby camp together, but she had to find out from her enemy, Rachel that Nicole signed up for dance camp instead. Astrid has a problem, Nicole’s mom was supposed to give Astrid a ride to roller derby camp all the way across town. Want to find out how Astrid finds a solution? I suggest you read the book. I related to this book because the same thing that happened to Astrid has happened to me many times. Well, besides the, “couldn’t find a ride part”. Astrid lost a friend and gained an enemy. Today I will be telling you about Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson. It is based on roller skating and it is a Newbery honor award book. I like this book because I like roller skating. The problem in the book is the main character can’t get a ride to roller derby. Will she get a ride? Read the book to find out.

In Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson, Astrid is Roller Girl. One day she went to a roller derby game with her friend Nicole. Astrid loved the way it looked. After the game was over Astrid saw a paper that said Roller Derby Camp. Astrid wanted to join and her mom said it was okay, but Nicole wanted to go to dance camp. So Astrid started going to Roller Derby camp and Nicole did not. Astrid's mom thought that Nicole's mom was giving her a ride to camp, but she was not. Also Astrid is not good at roller derby. Will she give up? Will she walk to practice? You will have to read the book to find out.

    This book relates to my life. In the book, Astrid feels like her bff doesn't like her. Also, she loves a sport but she is not good at it. In my life I feel like my friend does not like me as much as she used to. Also, I feel like I am not good at the sport I play.  In the story Astrid gets new friends and I am making new friends too. Astrid and I have a lot in common.

Sticks and Stones by Abby Cooper

In Sticks and Stones by Abby Cooper, a girl named Elyse has a disorder that causes words that other people call her to come up on her skin in itchy rashes. They get worse depending on how bad the word is. This story takes place at her school. Another problem that Elyse faces is, she gets lost on a trip in a snowstorm.  Will she manage to make it back?

I think that having words appear on your skin  would be both embarrassing and painful. I think the story is saying to be more careful with your words. As we are not able to see the words, they still can still have a painful effect on others. This story is a big mix of emotions, sadness, happiness, stress, and even more. I definitely recommend this book to others, as it is very enjoyable to read.

I wanted to review the book Tricked by Jen Calonita . It is about a girl named Gilly who used to be a thief and a bad girl, but then she finds herself in Fairy Tale Reform School, which turns her into the opposite. Now she is a hero. She has been released out of Fairy Tale Reform School (FTRS), because now she is a fully reformed hero, at least FTRS thinks so. But then, Rumpelstiltskin comes along with some trouble, and Gilly wants to find a way to go and rescue her school and her friends before Rumpelstiltskin takes his revenge.

I like the book because it is like an adventure, and I love adventures. Also, the girl Gilly is tough, like me, and I like tough people. I always have an adventure everyday. My life is an adventure like Gilly’s, which never stops. I live for adventure. I like stories, especially when there is trouble or evil in them. I love adventure books and movies. Adventure is my favorite part of life.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling, it is Harry Potter’s fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and it is an exciting yet scary year. He has been seeing things in his sleep and his scar has been hurting at certain times, which means Voldemort is mad or near. Hermione, Ron and some other students at Hogwarts want to learn Defence Against the Dark Arts just in case he comes back. The only problem is that the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Professor Umbridge banned any sort of group or club without her permission. Will they get caught and possibly get expelled or will everything be okay? Will Voldemort return? Find out in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

I enjoyed this book very much. It is a longer book, but it was interesting the whole way through. I had so many feelings throughout the whole book. At some points I was happy others I was angry or upset. I liked the book because of the fantasy. There are many things in it that could not happen in real life. I think that this is cool. This is one of the things that makes me want to read more.

Upside-Down Magic by Emily Jenkins

Upside-Down Magic by Emily Jenkins is a fun book to read. You'll enjoy it, especially if you like books about magical children. The world the author creates is full of kids who can disappear, or start fires with their minds, hover above the floor or even turn themselves into animals. Nory is the main character in the story and of course she has a problem. When she tries to turn herself into a kitten like all the normal kids, her magic turns upside-down. She becomes part cat, part beaver and loses almost all of Nory in the mix.

Although this story is definitely a fantasy, the kinds of problems Nory faces trying to fit in but feeling different are very realistic. Her family just wants her to be normal. Will she find a place where she can fit in? Read this great RICBA nominee and find out.

Paper Things by Jennifer Richard Jacobson

Paper Things by Jennifer Richard Jacobson is an enlightening book.  Ari and her big brother Gage have been taken in by a woman who used to know their mother. When Gage wants to move out, Ari goes with him. Everything becomes very complicated as Gage tries to do his best for his little sister, juggling where they will stay each night. The author really lets you feel what it would be like to be a young girl who is homeless. Ari's life starts to unravel.  All the things that used to be easy become impossible tasks; eating, staying clean, getting her homework done. You will want to read this RICBA nominee to find out how it ends.

I really liked this book. Ari is a very believable character. She is in 5th grade, but still plays with her paper dolls. She's not ready to grow up, but she might have too.

Nerds by Michael Buckley

In the book, Nerds by Michael Buckley, there is a girl who is fighting a scientist. The scientist is on a train fighting the girl.  She is about to fall off when she catches herself. Then the liquid spills out and all over them. The characters are nerds who were being bullied so they become scientists. The villains are attacking the science nerds.

I think my rating for this book would be a five star. You should read this if you like action. I like action stories because it’s described very well. NERDS, stands for National Espionage Rescue and Defense Society. The NERDS fight villains. I like how the books in this series are set up.
