Five Nights at Freddy’s: The Silver Eyes by Scott Cawthon

Five Nights at Freddy’s: The Silver Eyes by Scott Cawthon is about a group of friends sneaking into an old restaurant where there is a seemingly  abandoned set of animatronics, shut down due to horrible smells coming from inside the animatronics. Although they seem completely harmless and shut down, that's not the case. There's 2 versions of this book: the graphic novel and the regular chapter book. In my opinion the graphic novel is just a lot more informative, the other one is still pretty good too. But it's probably around 6-7th grade reading level. The graphic novel is a lot shorter, but it really shows all the scenes by using images. 

I really liked this book when I read it. I don't usually read a lot but I read this book in around 4 hours. I would definitely recommend it to people as it has a lot of action and adventure (and story) . It has a good connection to the game it's based on, with all the animatronics in the correct spots they were in the game.

Who Was John F. Kennedy? by Yona Zeldis McDonough

I like Who Was John F. Kennedy? by Yona Zeldis McDonough, because it tells the life of president John F. Kennedy! It talks about his early life, accomplishments and sad death. You will also learn about his mom, dad and wife. JFK has experiences as a war hero, President, representative and Congressman.

The book is great, but if you read it for yourself it's even better. The number one reason I like it is, it is both sad and happy. The book talks about JFK’s accomplishments and the death of his loved ones.

A Dog’s Purpose by Cameron W. Bruce

In A Dog’s Purpose by Cameron W. Bruce the dog goes through four reincarnations. In the first reincarnation his name was Bailey and his owner’s name was Ethan. He loves Ethan. Ethan fell in love with this girl. Her name was Hannah and they dated for a while. Later Ethan found out that Hannah had a different boyfriend. Ethan was sad and  then he was lonely for a while, but at least he still had Bailey. Bailey gets sick so he didn’t have anybody. So then when Bailey dies he goes into a different dog. That was the first reincarnation.  Read to find out about his other reincarnations.

I like this book because I like dogs a lot. I don’t have a dog but I get to visit with my grandmother’s dog. Also, I like this book because it reminded me of my other grandmother’s dog who died on Christmas. That’s sad. But now I hope he might get reincarnated.

The Trail by Meika Hashimoto

The Trail by Meika Hashimoto is another RICBA Nominee for 2019. It is about a boy named Toby who is attempting to hike a section of the Appalachian Trail.... alone. He has run away from his grandmother and he knows she will be worried about him. He's frightened a lot of the time. There are bears in the woods and he feels bad luck seems to follow him wherever he goes. But, he is one determined boy. Can he succeed in accomplishing the goal he set with his best friend Lucas? Lucas, who should be hiking right along with him, but is not.

I love hiking and have traveled most of the trails in Rhode Island, so this book appealed to me. I like how Toby faces his fears when he is feeling completely overwhelmed, always trying to remember the rules of survival he learned from Lucas's father. I also enjoyed the characters Toby meets along the way, the other hikers, and a very hungry dog who needs a friend just as much as Toby does.

Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier

Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier is about a girl who is sick. Her name is Maya and her family had moved to California. Maya has an older sister and her name is Catrina, but some people call her Cat for a nickname. When they moved, Catrina and Maya went for a walk. They went to the beach. Then they saw an arcade and Catrina lost Maya. When she went to find her, she saw that she was playing with a ghost. Catrina told her to come to her, but Maya did not. Instead she started coughing because she was sick. Will Maya be okay?


I like this book because it is funny and it is one of my favorite books. I think it is also a little sad, because the girls see all their grandparents who are now ghosts. I also like it because it is about a Day of the Dead celebration, which is the day after Halloween, and that is one of my favorite holidays. But otherwise it is a really good book.

Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier, is a graphic novel. The main character is Catrina. Her and her little sister move into a town because her sister has lung disease. But Maya, Catrina’s little sister is obsessed with ghosts so she went to a spot to speak to them. Then Maya faints! Will Maya survive this horrible disease?

I thought this book was amazing. It made me feel like I was in the book imagining stuff but I wasn't in the pictures. I recommend you read this book because it is inspiring. It´s inspiring because it made me think about getting along with my sister and I thought, “Oh, I don’t really get along with my sister! I should really be happy for what I have.” That´s what I think about the book. I really like it, and I think you will too.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling

   Strange things are happening at the magical school, Hogwarts, during Harry Potter’s sixth year in J. K. Rowling’s book, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.    If you liked the first five books in the Harry Potter series, you will love this one.  I love Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince because it is full of fantasy, mystery, and a lot of action. It’s about normal people like me living a life and going to school in a magical world.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling, it is Harry Potter’s fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and it is an exciting yet scary year. He has been seeing things in his sleep and his scar has been hurting at certain times, which means Voldemort is mad or near. Hermione, Ron and some other students at Hogwarts want to learn Defence Against the Dark Arts just in case he comes back. The only problem is that the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Professor Umbridge banned any sort of group or club without her permission. Will they get caught and possibly get expelled or will everything be okay? Will Voldemort return? Find out in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

I enjoyed this book very much. It is a longer book, but it was interesting the whole way through. I had so many feelings throughout the whole book. At some points I was happy others I was angry or upset. I liked the book because of the fantasy. There are many things in it that could not happen in real life. I think that this is cool. This is one of the things that makes me want to read more.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K Rowling

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K Rowling is one of the best books I've ever read. Harry Potter is not a normal boy. He is a wizard. His parents died when he was a one year old by the hand of Lord Voldemort. Harry’s mom gave up her life to save Harry, so when Voldemort tried to kill Harry it backfired. Now he is trying to find horcruxes to defeat Voldemort. Read the book to find out what happens.

This book reminds me that everything is not always going to be easy, but don’t give up. If you don’t try you’ll never succeed. This book reminds me that life is full of mistakes. If you don’t admit your mistakes you may lose something or someone.

The Red Pencil by Andrea Davis Pinkney

The Red Pencil by Andrea Davis Pinkney tells a story using poetry. Amira is a twelve year old girl living in South Darfur, Africa. She lives simply and happily with her Muma, Dando and little sister, Leila on their family farm. She loves to draw pictures with a stick in the sandy soil. Unfortunately, the peace will not last as her family gets caught up in a war that Amira can not understand. She must flee with the last of her village as she leaves her family home in ashes.

The story begins in 2003 and brings the conflicts between fighting factions in Africa to a personal, understandable level for students. Amira's story will help develop empathy in anyone who reads it. Although it is a story of fiction, the topics covered in the book; death, war, grief, refugee camps, and loss are very real. This would be an ideal read aloud with students. Plan on sharing Amira's drawings with your document camera. It is a story of war and hardship, but also a story of family and ultimately hope. RICBA nominee 2016

Counting by 7s by Holy Goldberg Sloan

Counting by 7s written by Holy Goldberg Sloan is a delightfully quirky story about a girl named Willow. On the front cover of the book is a quote, "If you're lost, you might need to swim against the tide." Willow Chance certainly begins this story quite lost. She is an oddball in a new school where she is struggling to fit in. To make matters worse, her teacher thinks she cheated on a standardized test. Life only gets harder for Willow after she is sent to see the school guidance counselor, Dell Duke, and shortly afterward a terrible tragedy strikes her family. Willow has to rely on the kindness of strangers, but in her own very unique way, she ends up giving back to everyone who helps her. I loved Willow's personality! She is brilliant and sensitive and a great role model for kids struggling to be comfortable with their own differences.

Listen!, by Stephanie S. Tolan

“What you hear depends on how you listen,” is the message or theme in the story Listen!, by Stephanie S. Tolan.  In this story 12 year old Charley Morgan sees a wild dog in the woods during her walk and automatically feels a connection to it.  Charley decides to take on the task of taming the wild dog, which she names Coyote.  One part of the Taming, which is what Charley calls her task of taming Coyote over the summer, is taking long walks around Eagle Lake, where Charley lives.  On these long walks, not only is Charley getting closer to Coyote, but Charley finds ways to connect with her mother who died years ago in a plane crash.  Charley connects to her mother by just listening to nature and everything around her.  I liked this book because I enjoyed reading how Charley’s character kind of changed a little throughout the story, leading her to become a strong and determined character.  So read to find out how Charley does it and follow her on her journey through Eagle Lake.

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard is a mystery story. When Ali goes missing, the four liars Aria, Hannah, Spencer, and Emily get texts from a mysterious person named "A".  "A" knows every secret about the liars. If the right people know their secrets they could be in a lot of trouble.  The liars need to know who "A" is.  Could this be Ali?  Read the books to find out. This is the first book in the Pretty Little Liars series by Sara Shepard. I would recommend this book to a lot of people. I personally loved this book! You will not find this book in our school library.

Mick Harte Was Here by Barbara Park

Mick Harte Was Here by Barbara Park is about a girl named Pheobe dealing with the loss of her brother, Mick.  Pheobe and Mick are very close in age, still in elementary school.  During the whole story you will see how Pheobe’s family loses their appetite, quit their jobs, and are depressed, staying in bed all day long. You can find this book in your school library.  If you have someone that was close to you that passed away, you can make a great connection with Mick Harte Was Here.

Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos

Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos is the 2012 Newbery award winner. Jack Gantos is the author of the Joey Pigza books, so if you like those, you'll probably enjoy this one too.  The main character, named Jack, suffers from gushing nosebleeds every time he gets nervous.  Jack is growing up in a small town in Pennsylvania.  He gets involved in a summer mystery, while helping an elderly neighbor write obituary (death) notices and American history articles for the local newspaper.  This is a humorous story and has a cast of goofy characters that will make you smile.

Umbrella Summer by Lisa Graff

Umbrella Summer by Lisa Graff is a heart-warming book about a little girl who is over-protected because her brother died from getting hit with a hockey puck.  The story takes place in the summer.  Annie, the little girl, goes on many adventures.  An old lady, who moves in across the street shares many stories with her.  The author’s message is to always “close your umbrella”.  If you read the book, you will find out what “close your umbrella” means.  I would recommend this book to whoever likes a sad book but something with a little humor.  I have had someone die in my family and I remember them by keeping some of their stuff.  If you experienced death in your family, don’t let it go to your heart!  Always believe they are there!  This is one of my favorite realistic fiction books.  I hope to find more books in my school library from Lisa Graff!!

Umbrella Summer is a fantastic story.  This story is about a girl named Annie and her best friend Rebecca.  Annie worries about everything from bicycle riding, to diseases and bug bites.  But one thing changed Annie’s whole life, her brother.  Annie’s brother Jared plays hockey.  He was hit in the chest with a hockey puck, and the doctor said that he would just have chest pains but he wouldl be fine. But everything was not fine, because Jared died.  Everyone keeps telling Annie not to worry so much, including her new neighbor across the street, whose house Rebecca thinks is haunted.  It turns out that the lady named, Petunia, is very nice.  I recommend this book because it is a book that you can just keep on reading forever, and it is very funny and in some parts, sad.

Deep And Dark And Dangerous is written by Mary Downing Hahn. This book is not for people who don’t like mystery. This book is about an eleven year old girl named Ali. She finds a pictures in her attic which has her mother and aunt.But someone else in the picture and no one knows who. And Ali  wants to  find who is in the picture.She goes to a cabin where her mother used to live with her cousin and aunt and meets a suspicious girl. Is she friendly? Does she know about the photo? Who is she really? Check out the book to find out all of the books secrets.

       This book gave me the chills, but in an exciting way wanting to know what's next. I fell in love with the book in 2015 when I read it for the first time. I read it in my spare time during class and at home when I was bored in my room. I thought this book would be boring but you can’t  judge a book by its cover. If you don’t read the beginning or the end you will not get what is happening. When I read it the second time I accidently skipped a couple pages. I didn't get what was happening and that was my second time. I laughed out loud when I realized what I did. But, I truly love this amazing mystery book.

The book Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn, is a horror book and also suspenseful. I enjoyed this book because something was always happening and you want to read on, but unfortunately I only had a certain amount of time to read it each day in class so I took it home and read a lot of it. One of my favorite characters is Sissy because she is mean and funny about everything.  That is a good thing, but also bad because you can get in trouble for being mean. Ali is the main character.  She has a little cousin named Emma, who is scared and has bad dreams about someone scary who her mom and aunt hung out with when they were little. This girl had a tragic accident and died. Read this book to find out what happened to the girl and what they do to prevent being haunted.

Do you like ghost stories? Well, if so, you would love Deep and Dark and Dangerous. Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn is eerie and suspenseful.  A girl named Ali finds a torn photo of her aunt and mom at Gull Cottage. Who is the other girl? Her aunt Dulcie shows up to ask Ali if she wanted to go to Gull Cottage. Once she’s there things start getting strange. She finds out who the girl was in the torn photo, a dark secret about her aunt and mom, and more. I highly recommend this book for people who like ghost stories. Never mess with a ghost!

Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Dawning Hahn is awesome. Deep and Dark and Dangerous will leave you at the edge of your seat.  Ali is 13 years old named and Ali’s cousin Emma go to Gull Cottage. There is a girl named Sissy and she is a bad influence.  Something goes wrong, but you will have to read to find out what it is.  Deep and Dark and Dangerous reminds me of a time my Aunt went to this lake house and there was something strange about that house.  Enjoy Deep and Dark and Dangerous.

The Ghost of Crutchfield Hall by Mary Downing Hahn is a historical fiction story. It has three main characters. They are Florence, Sophia, and James. This story is about a girl named Sophia who used to live with her uncle, but one day she died. It starts off a long time ago in the nineteenth century in London.  Florence is an orphan. Her uncle finally takes Florence to live with him. After she arrived she was walking around looking for her room, when suddenly in the hall she felt like someone was watching her…..! What comes next?!  After I finished this book I felt like I wanted to read it all over again and again! I hope you want to do the same. Mary Downing Hanhn is a great author.  She wrote other good books, like Deep, Dark and Dangerous. That’s my second favorite book! The reason why I chose this book is because I love ghost stories.  Even though they don’t frighten me this book might frighten you!!! My two favorite characters are Florence and Sophia. Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech

Walk Two Moons is my favorite book by Sharon Creech. If you like sad but humorous fiction stories, this is the right book for you. This book is about a girl named Salamanca, otherwise known as Sal. She is going on a road trip with her grandparents Hiddle to Lewiston, Idaho, to see Sal’s mother, Chanhassen, who is resting in Idaho after leaving her home in Bybanks, Kentucky. On the way to Idaho, Sal tells her grandparents the story of Phoebe (FEE-be) Winterbottom, Sal’s peculiar best friend, whose mother also ran away from home. Salamanca, of course, is my favorite character in Walk Two Moons. I love Salamanca because she is easygoing and unique. I hate the fact that her life is getting worse and worse, but I am glad that she meets a couple friends, like Phoebe Winterbottom, Mary Lou Finney, and Ben Finney. Every story has a setting. When Sal is traveling with her grandparents from Ohio to Idaho, the setting is obviously across the United States. You will notice they stop at tourist spots along the way. Why on Earth would they waste their time in the Badlands and Black Hills? Well, as Sal points out, her mother had been in those places. The grandparents had decided to follow Chanhassen.


This is a fiction story about family life. The message in this book is this: Even if you lose a loved one, they are not gone. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sad and humorous stories. Sharon Creech is a great author. Also read Heartbeat, Love That Dog, and the prequel to Walk Two Moons, Absolutely Normal Chaos.

Each Little Bird That Sings by Deborah Wiles

If you enjoyed Umbrella Summer, you should try this book.  Deborah Wiles develops great, quirky characters in this book set in Mississippi.  The main character's name is Comfort.  Comfort's family runs a funeral home and Comfort seems to be very good at dealing with death and grief.  But of course, every book has a problem, and Comfort gets hit with a few big ones in this book.  I can guarantee that you'll fall in love with her and her dog Dismay.  Give it a read, and let me know what you think.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

The Graveyard Book was the Newbery Winner of 2009.  I thought maybe some of you had not read it yet, and needed to hear a little bit about it first.  The main character's name is Nobody Owens.  Because his parents are murdered when he is just a toddler, he ends up being raised by ghosts and lives in a graveyard.  This is a book full of magic and adventure.  Bod, as his friends call him, lives under the constant danger of being found by the evil man who had killed his parents.  If you want to find out if Bod can escape danger and live a normal life, you're going to have to read the book.  Let me know when you do.  I'd love to hear what you think about it.  Mrs. C.

The Graveyard Book is by Neil Gaiman.  If you like spooky, a little bit creepy books, then you’re going to love the book called The Graveyard Book. The Graveyard Book is a one of a kind story told by Bod Owens, short for Nobody Owens.  Bod, ever since he was a kid, lived in a graveyard.  A man named Jack has been trying to find him and is trying to kill him.  Now Bod has never been out of the Graveyard and is thinking about trying to leave.  Will Bod try to leave or won’t he.  Find out by reading this book.  I like this book because it has lots of voice and character.  I like this book also because it’s adventurous.  If you love spooky and adventurous books then you’re sure going to love this book.  I hope you enjoy it like I did.
