The Missing Piece is by Shel Silverstein and is about a letter “O” that has a piece missing. He encounters a lot of little things.  He falls into a hole and he hits a wall and he smells flowers. But he finds pieces and some don’t fit. Will he find his missing piece?

Shel Sliverstein is known for his great drawings. This book does not disappoint. And if you ever feel like you have a missing piece then this book is for you.

The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson

The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson, is a book about  a little girl that got sent from home to home over and over again. Finally Gilly goes to a foster home and the foster mom’s name is Mrs. Trotter. She has another foster boy there. His name is William Ernest. Gilley hates the foster mom. She said that she is a fat hippo.

I feel bad that this can happen in real life and that kids have to go through being sent from foster home to foster home, over and over again. I would never want to have to walk in Gilly’s shoes in my life. One of my best friends from the day I was born was going though a lot. When she was one, her parents got divorced and she stayed with her mom and went with her dad on the weekends. It is now 2017 and she's eleven. Her mom had another baby with a different guy. Her mom  now sees her on the weekends. My friend that's 11 is now with her dad. I don't get to see her as much any more.

Homeless bird, by Gloria Whelan

Homeless bird, by Gloria Whelan, is a wonderful book for readers interested in realistic fiction. It is about a girl, Koly who is thirteen years old and lives in India. Her Mom and Dad were looking for someone for her to marry. They find a boy who was supposedly 16 and in good health… Read it to find out what happens next.   

I really liked this book because it made me understand how this girl felt, when she found out what had happened to her husband. I have never read a book like this, and I am glad I took the chance to read it. This book was very heartwarming, and it made me realize how lucky I am to have a life like mine.

A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielsen

     A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielsen, is about a girl named Gerta and her family who wake up in the middle of the night when the Berlin Wall is being built. At the time, her father and little brother are out on a mission so they end up getting separated from the rest of the family. Gerta and her older brother Fritz decide they are going to try and escape by digging a tunnel underground while their mother is away visiting family. Along the way they face challenges and struggles.

    I really enjoyed this book because, it had some adventure and you never really knew what was going to happen next. My favorite part of this book was when Gerta started digging the hole underground because it was like she was just tired of everything that was going on and wanted to escape. I related to this book because it´s like when one of your friends move away and you want to find a way to be with them again.

I Totally Funniest by James Patterson

I Totally Funniest by James Patterson is a great book! In the story, the main character Jamie Grimm has been entered into a Planet's Funniest Kid competition by his Uncle. When Jamie returns home he starts to act like a jerk to his friends, so his friends don’t hang out with him anymore. Jamie also has to face major competition from Chatty Patty, Anthony, and Judy.This book reminds me of a vacation trip I went on to Disney, and once I was in an eating competition. I really like this book because the characters show great feeling and suspense. Read this book to find out if Jamie Grimm wins the Planet's Funniest Kid competition.

Dork Diaries, tales from a not-so-smart miss know it all by Rachel Renee Russell is a book about a girl named Nikki. She was being bullied by a girl named Mackenzie. A while later they all had to visit different schools for a week to see what it was like. Nikki went to this school and there was a girl named Taffy. At the time, Taffy was very nice and annoying and loved to take selfies. Later Nikki saw her frenemy Mackenzie. Mackenzie had two annoying people who Nikki called bullies. Nikki's annoying, pretending-to-be-nice-friend Taffy, became a really big bully. Nikki wished she was with her two friends and her crush, but instead she got seperated into a different school. Will Nikki become friends with her frenemy? Will she ever find out why Mackenzie is a bully? Will Nikki get back at Taffy? I like Dork Diaries. I read them all the time. Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not-So-Smart Miss Know-It-All is by Rachel Renee Russell. If you're a girl who likes to read about middle school, or reading diaries, or even writing a diary, then Dork Diaries would be a good book for you to read. There's a girl named Nikki Maxwell, she writes a diary about what’s been happening in her life through middle school and her horrible experiences with MacKenzie Hollister and her friends. Nikki has two best friends named Chloe and Zoe who help her through these experiences with Brandon (her crush) and MacKenzie. When Nikki wants to sign up for a part in writing the school newspaper with Brandon, a few things hold her back, including MacKenzie. If you want to find out what the problems were and how she dealt with them you're going to have to read and find out!

I personally liked this book because when I read the first book I had no idea what it was going to be about. I kept on reading to the end of Dork Diaries and I liked these books, because the books that I’ve read so far have been all happy endings. Also the author describes the place and what happened to Nikki so well it feels like you're actually there with her. If you read, or like Diary of A Wimpy Kid books, the Dork Diaries books are very similar.I really liked this book and I suggest you also read it if you're interested in these types of books!

The Swift Boys and Me by Kody Keplinger

The Swift Boys and Me by Kody Keplinger is a RICBA nominee for 2016.  It is a very touching story of a young girl named Nola and her three neighbors Brian, Canaan, and Kevin Swift. Right at the beginning of the summer, Nola witnesses Mr. Swift, the boys' father driving away from the duplex where they live. Nola soon finds out something is very wrong next door. Nola expects the summer to be filled with fun with her three best friends, just like every summer she can remember. But this summer is a turning point in all of their lives, one where the children get caught up in problems they can't control.

I fell in love with the tragic story of Nola and Canaan. It is the story of a childhood romance, with raw emotions and true feelings, a real tearjerker. Keplinger does a terrific job giving her characters voice. When you finish the book you will feel like all the kids in the neighborhood are people you know and care about.

I thought this book was awesome and I enjoyed reading this story very much! I recommend this book for grades 4-6. I love the author’s type of writing style too! The characters in this book remind me very much of other characters I have read about before, such as the main characters in Drama. If you haven’t read this book, you will enjoy it as much as I did!

The Swift Boys and Me by Kody Keplinger is a very heartwarming and emotional story about a girl named Nola who lives in a duplex with three boys named Kevin, Brian, and Cannan. One morning she witnesses their father drive away and never come back. Turns out the wave he gave her was a bigger goodbye than the boys ever got.

     I loved this story. There were ups, downs, sad and funny, but most of all touching moments. This book is great for any 6th or 7th grader. My favorite part was when Nola, Kevin, and Cannan snuck into their neighbor's yard and jumped on his trampoline without asking and used Kevin as a lookout! This book reminds me of when me and my friend got in a big fight and didn’t talk for a while but we are best friends now. Go check out this book for an amazing experience you'll never forget!

The Swift Boys & Me by Kody Keplinger is about a girl named Nola and the boys that live next door.  Nola tries to solve a problem to get her and the boys to be friends again and also to try to fix everything with their dad. There was some trouble with the boys. One of them is  sleeping at his friend’s house. One of the other brothers is being friends with the boys that bully Nola. Will he realize that he’s wrong and stand up for her against the bullies? Will he apologise for being mean to Nola and will she still be mad at him? Follow Nola on the amazing journey to get her friend’s dad back and face many crazy challenges!

It is a great book with a bunch of topics; drama, bullying, sadness, happiness. But it kind of is like real life because bullies, drama, feelings, sadness, and happiness are all a part of a regular life. This reminds me of a time me and a friend got into a fight. I think this is a good book for 4-6th graders because some people deal with this stuff every day.

As Simple as it Seems by Sarah Weeks

As Simple as it Seems might sound like a boring book but I promise that it's not.  The author, Sarah Weeks, wrote a realistic fiction book to try and relate to real life.  The main characters, Verbeana and Pooch become best friends.  Pooch runs into Verbeana at Bonners Lake and thinks that she is the ghost of Tracy Allen.  Verbeana decides to go along with Pooch.  At home, Verbeana finds out that her biological mother is an alcoholic, which is the reason she is so small.  She also finds out that her biological father is in jail for killing a man with his bare hands.  When Verbeana finds out what her biological parents were like, she becomes a totally different person and thinks that she is cruel and mean.  The theme of the book is to be yourself and let the nice of you shine through.  At the lake, Pooch and Verbeana fix up a boat.  Once they fix it up, they decide to go into the lake but keep a rope tied to a tree so they don’t go far.  The rope unties but you are going to have to find out what happens next when you read the book.  If you like emotional stories, I recommend this one.  I hope that you enjoyed this book as much as I did!  The characters found out that sometimes, life isn’t as simple as it seems!

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green is about a sixteen year old girl named Hazel Grace Lancaster who was diagnosed with cancer when she was thirteen years old.  One day her parents decided she was depressed because she spent most of her time inside, rarely went out, had a bad appetite, and read the same book over and over again.  Hazel’s doctor decided Hazel should go to a support group. Hazel refused to go, but she does to make her parents happy.  Little does she know she would never regret it when she meets Augustus Waters.

When I read “The Fault In Our Stars” I completely fell in love with this book and never stopped reading it.  While I’m reading it I’m laughing, I’m crying, I’m happy, I’m sad, this book gives me many emotions.  Personally I’m a huge fan of John Green’s books, but “The Fault In Our Stars” is my favorite book by him.  I also love the movie!

Listen!, by Stephanie S. Tolan

“What you hear depends on how you listen,” is the message or theme in the story Listen!, by Stephanie S. Tolan.  In this story 12 year old Charley Morgan sees a wild dog in the woods during her walk and automatically feels a connection to it.  Charley decides to take on the task of taming the wild dog, which she names Coyote.  One part of the Taming, which is what Charley calls her task of taming Coyote over the summer, is taking long walks around Eagle Lake, where Charley lives.  On these long walks, not only is Charley getting closer to Coyote, but Charley finds ways to connect with her mother who died years ago in a plane crash.  Charley connects to her mother by just listening to nature and everything around her.  I liked this book because I enjoyed reading how Charley’s character kind of changed a little throughout the story, leading her to become a strong and determined character.  So read to find out how Charley does it and follow her on her journey through Eagle Lake.

Holes by Louis Sachar

Holes by Louis Sachar is a book about teamwork that you can't stop reading. It’s about a boy who goes to a prison camp. Stanley, the main character is forced to dig holes from early in the morning to the hottest part of the day, even though he swears he is innocent of the crime they charged him with. It's hard for him to fit in since he is fatter than the others, so he works slower and has to work very hard to keep up. He grows tougher over time, loses weight, and gets faster and he’s able to do things that he wouldn’t have when he first got to camp.

I really like this book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a book about trying your best to complete your goals. My favorite thing about the book is how Stanley works very hard to keep up with the others and he ends up accomplishing goals that he didn’t even know were possible for him. This book reminds me a lot of people who have difficulties doing certain things or completing their goals. But if you try really hard you will complete anything you want. So why don't you read Holes I bet you’ll really like it.

Holes, by Louis Sachar is a wonderful book!  It’s about a little boy named Stanley Yelnats.  Stanley’s family has bad luck. One day Stanley does something bad and he gets sent to camp.  It’s not an ordinary camp though.  They dig holes that are 5 foot by 5 foot deep.   At camp he tries to run away with his new friend that he met at camp.  The Warden does not like him and his friends are there too! At camp there was a car crash involved and more funny things.  It might be funny now but when the Warden comes around and finds out you will be praying for Stanley and his friends.  There are chapters where you want to cry, laugh, or even be scared for Stanley and his friends.  Over all this is a great book.  Read to find out what chapters are sad, scary, or funny.  I dare you not to laugh, or be frightened.

"There is no lake at Camp Green Lake".  Holes by Louis Sachar is an action and adventure story.  Stanley is a boy who is accused of stealing a pair of shoes.  He is sentenced for 18 months in camp green lake.  While there, he learns some very big secrets, like who framed him.  Once I was blamed for something I didn't do.  Has that ever happened to you?  I think this is a must read!

Almost Home by Joan Bauer

Almost Home By Joan Bauer is a book about a dog that is unwanted and homeless. A girl, Sugar, is wandering around with her mother, Reba. Sugar gets handed a puppy from a man running across town. He said that he did not want the dog so he gave it to Sugar. Sugar's father, Mr. Leeland, left her and her mother to be homeless. Mr. Leeland was a money gambler and left Reba to pay off his debts. Soon after, they are kicked out of their home. Sugar and her puppy, Shush, go into a foster home while Reba is out looking for something better for them. 

My connections to this book are that I also have a puppy. When I was very little, I also had a dad that left me. If you read this book you might get sad in the beginning, although it gets way happier. Read this, you won’t regret it!

Wonder by R.J. Palacio

Wonder by R.J. Palacio is about the difficulties of a boy with an abnormal face. Everyone keeps judging him and he finally starts going to school. See how he overcomes getting bullied by the people in his school.

The book gives a few life lessons that I really liked. This reminds me of the difficulties of school and how I'm pulling through. One of the life lessons is to be kind to others and people will be kind to you. In other words, treat people the way you want to be treated. Sometimes I get bullied in school by a person that shall not be named, but I have my friends to help me, just like the protagonist in this book.

In this book Wonder by R.J. Palacio, which is a #1 New York Times Bestseller, there is a boy who has a deformed face. He goes to school for the first time and he has to face all the struggles of school and bullies because he is different. It is very difficult for him in the beginning since people at public school aren't used to having someone as different as him there. Read the story to find out more and get a touching feeling in your heart. I really like this book because it is a touching story and really hits a soft part of your heart. It is so meaningful and you should truly read it. Wonder is emotional and is such a great story with great details you just want to keep reading.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio. is a pretty cool and nice book to read in class or at home for some calm time. I read this book in 4th grade and thought it was very touching and a very calming story. Auggie is a boy who has a not so normal face. His face looks a little weird. but other than that he has some good friends and keeps his Friendships! Wonder was a good book to read. I really think this was really helpful for friendship and bullying. I really think people should read for help on bullying and to not judge people on the way they look on the outside, but what they are like on the inside.

The book Wonder by R.J. Palacio, is about a boy named Auggie who was born with a deformed face. He starts the fifth grade in a public school for the first time. Auggie faces many challenges along the way, such as bullies, friends, and family. As the school year goes on, Auggie makes some great friends too. Will Auggie continue going to a public school or will he have his mom homeschool him again?

I like this story because it gives me many different feeling as I read it. It made me feel happy, sad, confused, angry, and excited.  I can relate to Via, the older sister because my brother just started school too. He’s in kindergarten but he doesn’t have a facial deformity. Because he just started school, we tend to focus on him more. This doesn’t really bother me as much as it bothers Via though. My family still focuses on me a lot too, just a little less than before, but I’m fine with it.

In the story Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, there is a boy named Auggie. The problem is that Auggie is different than most of the other kids. He has to try to fit in at his new school. It was his first year in a school after being home schooled for his first five years of school. The cause of this problem is that Auggie’s face is deformed. Will he survive middle school?

I thought that the book was very good and had a lot of detail. The author gave me a very vivid picture of the characters and the situations. It was very sad when Auggie had to try and fit in and the other kids wouldn’t accept him.

When I was new at this school, I didn’t know many people. I had to make new friends even though it was a challenge. This made me feel a connection to Auggie.  My first friends were Jack and Will, and one of Auggie’s first friends was Jack Will.

The book Wonder is by R.J. Palacio. It is about a kid that gets picked on because he has a deformed face. Auggie Pullman had been home schooled until the 5th grade. This kid named Julien is a jerk to Auggie because he is deformed. Auggie made a friend named Jack Will. They also did a project together and got first place. How do you think Auggie is going to end up with the rest of the 5th graders.

I love this book. It  is a really good book that makes you want to read on. I really recommend this book for you. This book reminds me of a kid that does not care what people think of him. It is not right for people to judge you on how you look or feel.

In Wonder by R.J. Palacio, there's a kid named August with a deformed face. He's been homeschooled all his life because of all his surgeries. His doctor says he doesn't need anymore surgeries for a couple years. His mother is making him go to school this year. He likes the school but there are some issues along the way. I enjoyed this book because of how it grabbed me and I just couldn't let it go. The story was told by different points of view. I liked August's point of view the most. August is a really nice kid. This book is kind of like the movie A Girl Like You because she gets bullied but keeps it inside. August gets bullied and doesn't tell anyone.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a fantastic book!  I would go so far as to say it should be required reading for every sixth grade student in both of my schools.  I'm hoping that many of my faculty members will put this book on a list as their next read aloud for their classes.  R.J. Palacio writes from the point of view of different children throughout the book and manages to accurately capture each person's feelings and voice.

Okay, by now you probably want to know what this book is about...  Wonder is a book about a boy who is born with a genetic abnormality that causes his face to be deformed.  His name is August, and through his voice we get to see the world from his point of view.  We learn about how he ignores the staring looks of strangers and the way they avoid touching him.  But we also learn how August has a kindness in him that lets him understand and forgive people.  Read this book and put yourself in the shoes of each of the unforgettable characters in the story.  You will learn some things about them, and about yourself in the process.

Have you wanted to read a book that is sad and funny?  Well then read this description of the book Wonder by R.J Palico, and you will surely want to read the whole book. 

The main characters in the book are Auggie and Via.  Via is Auggies sister.  Auggie is in fifth grade and Via is In high school.  In the story Auggie has some trouble, because he is going to public school for the first time.  I know that this sounds weird but there is more.  Auggie has facial deformities and he is scared he will be made fun of.  I know that I would be scared too.  Would you be scared?  Via is in high school and she is also having some difficulties, and that is making friends and losing friends.  Just like Via, in fifth grade I had some trouble, because some of my friends were not so nice to me.  I made new friends and that is what counts.

This story is phenomenal because of its details and how the author explains the story almost as if it is real.  I really hope that you choose this book because it is just so good!

The book Wonder is a tremendous and astonishing book for kids! This book is realistic fiction. The main characters are August, Julian, Summer, and Jack Will. August has facial disabilities and he has been home schooled and now he is starting a real school as a 5^th grader. Read to see what happens to August. I think the message is “treat people the way you want to be treated”! The book can be sad and informational at the same time. I would highly recommend this book!

Wonder by R.J Palacio is an amazing book. The book helps you understand why you shouldn’t judge people by their looks. It has so many funny moments and also a lot of it is really sad. If you want to know more, READ IT!

           

This book is a connection to my life because my friend in North Carolina named Garret, has a different face but he still goes to school and a lot of bad things happen to him. He gets bullied. I feel like I am like the character Summer, because I stand up for him.

         

Wonder is a very good book for the 5th graders, because they would understand the meaning of this book. I hope you get to this read book, because it’s an amazing book!

Wonder  by RJ. Palacio is a very good book. It’s about a little kid named August. He has a cleft palate. Ok this year is August’s first year of school. He was homeschooled his whole life. In the hallway everyone stares at him all the time. One day the 5th grade boys were making fun of August, so his older sister Via screamed at the kids. But just because someone looks different doesn't mean that they are different. Everyone should be treated the same.

Wonder is a very good book. August’s big sister Via always sticks up for him. You should read this book because it is awesome. August is a regular kid. He plays games, sports, and eats ice cream. If you think about it, everyone is the same, no one is different.

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate is the 2013 Newbery winner.  I read it in just over two hours this morning.  It is a story told from the point of view of a gorilla named Ivan.  He lives in a cage in a mall, with an elephant friend Stella, and a small dog named Bob.  When a baby elephant, named Ruby is brought to the mall, Ivan makes a promise to Stella that he now must find a way to keep.  But how will he help Ruby to live with other elephants, so that she will not become a solitary elephant, the way he is the one and only Ivan?  Loosely based on true events in the life of Ivan, a real shopping mall gorilla, this book brought me to tears.  It would make a great read aloud for teachers and should be on all students' "must read" list.

The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate is a RICBA nominee of 2014. Ivan is a gorilla that used to live in the wild with his family. Now, he lives in a mall with other animals. There are some sad parts with his best friend Stella. Stella is an elephant. I loved the ending and I think you will too!

I liked the part when Ivan lives in a house with Mac and his wife. I liked this part because it is funny when a gorilla lives in a house. This book reminds me of animals I see locked in cages. Kids bother them by scaring the animals and hurting them. It also reminds me of when people play with animals. This is a great book I recommend it to animal lovers.

Mick Harte Was Here by Barbara Park is about a girl named Pheobe dealing with the loss of her brother, Mick.  Pheobe and Mick are very close in age, still in elementary school.  During the whole story you will see how Pheobe’s family loses their appetite, quit their jobs, and are depressed, staying in bed all day long. You can find this book in your school library.  If you have someone that was close to you that passed away, you can make a great connection with Mick Harte Was Here.

Skellig by David Almond

Skellig is a very good book! All I am going to say is that the characters are Mina, Baby, Michael, Dad, Mom, and a …… I’m not telling you who else is left.  The author is David Almond.  The book is really good, but sad.  The main part is about a boy and a girl who find a strange beast in their garage.  This book is really good.  If you want to read it, go to the public library.

Middle School, Get Me Out of Here, by James Patterson

If you like books that are funny, sad or exciting, try out the book Middle School, Get Me Out of Here, by James Patterson!  Your main characters in the story are Rafe and Leo.  Leo is Rafe’s brother that died at birth, but helps him with Get Me Out of Here.  Rafe and his family move to the city and his life kind of changes.  This lead to Rafe getting transferred into an art school where he finds a friend named Matty, but makes enemies too.  If you want find out how it really began, read James Patterson’s first book Middle School, the Worst Years of My Life!  I would definitely recommend this book and the first one!

Crispin at the Edge of the World by Avi

Crispin at the Edge of the World by Avi is about a boy named Crispin and a man named Bear who are being chased by the town government. When they are in their travels, they meet a young girl named Troth. Troth lives with an old lady in the woods. After the old lady is beaten to death, Troth, Crispin, and Bear head off to a faraway place .The book is sad and adventurous. This book is good for anybody who wants a sad but adventurous story.

The Giver by Lois Lowry

The Giver by Lois Lowry is a great read, and keeps you wondering.  A boy named Jonas is selected to be the Receiver of Memory as his job for the community.  In this community there is no color, everything is the same, and everything is chosen for you, like what you do for a living and who you marry.  When you begin to have feelings for someone, which they call Stirrings, you have to take special pills so that way everything stays in order and you don’t fall in love with anyone.  Jonas meets his instructor and calls him Giver. Giver and Jonas don’t like sameness and hatch a plan to let everyone know what it’s like to have freedom.  Does their plan work?  Read to find out (;

I recommend The Giver by Lois Lowry. This book takes place in a community in the future with no war, no emotion, and no freedom. The Giver is about a boy named Jonas who was chosen to receive special training when he turned 12.  His job was supposed to be secret.  He cannot talk about his day with the Giver.  He will not be allowed to finish training if he did.  The Giver is a person who can see in the future and the past.  The Giver is very important to the community because when the council members can’t make an important decision, they ask the giver to look into the future.  If the Giver makes a bad decision or something goes wrong, the whole community fails.  Follow Jonas on his journey to become the next Giver.  I love this book; it’s sad, adventurous and exciting.  I give it five stars.  If you read this book it will make you cry.
