The Last Kids on Earth by Max Brallier

The Last Kids on Earth by Max Brallier is about Jack Sullivan is a 13-year-old kid that is going through a monster apocalypse. Jack thinks he’s the last of his kind and everyone becomes zombies. Jack tries to save the world, but his first move is to save his friends by thinking he is in a hero movie.

My favorite character is Jack because he loves movies and soda just like I do! My favorite scene in the book is when Jack has to sneak by Blarg to get a super small screwdriver to fix his walkie-talkie to talk to Quint. In the book there are people and middle-schools briefly in the book, but if it was real it would have it for a longer time.

The Creature from the Seventh Grade, Boy or Beast

The Creature from the Seventh Grade, Boy or Beast by Bob Balaban is about a boy that is in the seventh grade that gets bullied. He gets bullied because he is a short and skinny seventh grader. He doesn't do any sports so he gets made fun of then something happens. He becomes a dinosaur, everyone likes him and he is nice and might try a sport.

I like the book because it is funny, cool and it is interesting. I connected with this book because I do not bully and I don't stand with bullying.

The Pack by Lisi Harrison

The Pack by Lisi Harrison has a girl group that Sadie (a New girl) wants to join. Sadie has a crush on an off-limits private-school boy. The girl that started the group's name is Lindsy, otherwise known as the queen bee. Sadie doesn't join a normal middle school… She joins a school named Charm House which has students that have magical powers.

I think you should read this because it is a story that maybe you can relate to in your own life. Sadie was me in 2nd grade when I transferred to my elementary school. Sadie was nervous like myself but she learned to overcome it. Someone in my class was the queen bee and she became my friend after a while.

Diary of the Wimpy Kid: The Meltdown

Diary of the Wimpy Kid: The Meltdown by Jeff Kinney Is a book about a boy named Greg Heffley who's trying to survive winter time. He is also trying to make it through middle school when he has a huge snowball fight with the kids on the flat part of the street because the kids who live on the hill of the street caught them trying to sled down the hill. They basically have a world war. Who wins? It was very close, but you have to read to find out.

In my opinion Diary of the Wimpy kid is one of the greatest book series of all time. I’ve read the whole book series and it is brilliant. It is comical, suspenseful, and awesome.

Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life by James Patterson

The plot of Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life by James Patterson, is about a boy named Rafe Khatchadorian. Rafe is going through middle school, which as you can tell by the title does not go very well for him.  Rafe is a very artistic kid that was born into a family with an annoying, nosey sister named Georgia, a loving and caring mom named Jules, and a mean, nasty, and sloppy dad that he calls Bear. Rafe has a plan that is an acronym for Rafe (rules aren't for everyone). Rafe’s plan is to try to break every rule in one year. Will he be able to do it or will he fail?

I loved this book. I really like the author’s imagination, and the outrageous characters. When reading the book you should really take your time to understand the characters and look at the pictures. Most readers will be around middle school age, but they will still find how true and funny this book is. If I had to rate this book I would give it a good 9, because although it's an amazing book, like any book it has its’ flaws, but those flaws are really tiny and you should still read the book.

Soar by Joan Bauer

Soar by Joan Bauer is a wonderful book! Soar is about a boy named Jeremiah who has a heart problem. He and his father have to move to Ohio because of a job Walt, his father, has to do. Jeremiah is a big baseball fan, but when something bad happens to one of the players on the town's baseball team, the town starts to die down. Jeremiah is very disappointed about this. He wants to do something about it, but what can he do?

I have an opinion on this book. I love it! It’s a wonderful book and I would recommend it! I like this book because it’s meaningful, and it’s fun. I would recommend this book to someone who likes baseball. This book is a wonderful book, but this is just my opinion. If you want to get a real opinion, read it for yourself!

Riley Mack by Chris Grabenstein

Have you ever got in trouble for helping people? Riley Mack by Chris Grabenstein, is about a fifth grader who helps those who are in need of help. A kid named Jamal gets bullied a lot in school by a sixth grader named Gavin Brown, but Gavin Brown’s father is the sheriff of the town. So when his dad is in the army in Afghanistan, he has to be a man and help others who are in need, alone with his friends, and no adults.

I like this book because I can relate to it. Grownups do not listen to me at times, they never believe me. I try to help people, but normally succeed.

Big Nate and Friends by Lincoln Peirce is a great book full of humor and adventure. If you like comics, then this is the book for you. Nate is a boy in middle school and is on a wild adventure with his friends, Teddy and Francis. Nate wants to sell wall hangings but Arthur is selling more.  Nate has a huge ego, and thinks everything is about him. Nate is also supposedly the leader of his small group of friends. He hates school and the social studies teacher, Mrs Godfrey. Teddy is like Nate a bit, he also doesn't like school, but then again who does? He doesn’t have a huge ego like Nate though. Francis is very smart and likes to go to school and get good grades, unlike Teddy and Nate. So if you're looking for a funny book to read that has comics then this is the book for you and I suggest you read this.

I thought the book was funny and had its moments. My favorite part was when Nate went to a school meeting and he was a reporter for the school paper. He fell asleep so someone else saw him and wrote in the paper “Reporter from p.s 38 falls asleep during meeting” and I thought that was funny. You should definitely read the book.

Middle School: My Brother Is a Big Fat Liar by James Patterson

Middle School: My Brother Is a Big Fat Liar by James Patterson, is a story about a girl named Georgia’s, 6th grade school year. Her brother Rafe had bullies that used to bother him, but now bully Georgia. So a girl named Rhonda mentors her so she can stand up to the bullies and have a good middle school childhood. Read to find out how her year was. Have fun reading this book!

I thought this was a great book. I have a few connections. I have an older brother. He warned me about middle school and he said it is going to be a bad year. Although I am now having a good year, I still wonder. Also, when I was in second or third grade instead, of being bullied I had a stuttering problem and I got called names because I stuttered. I got a reading mentor and fluency mentor, so I can speak more fluently. Now I can speak with more fluency, but I sometimes mess up with my words, but I don’t really care. Those are my personal connections with this book. Now, go read the book!

He forgets his homework and gets detention. Before the school year starts, Rafe and his mom go to his school to talk with the principals. What I like best about the story is when Rafe joins the flag football team because Rafe NEVER liked sports. My sister at school gets bullied sometimes. Middle School: Save Rafe by James Patterson is a great story for people who like realistic fiction. Rafe was at a school in the city, but the school is now closing. So he has to try to get back into his old school. He got kicked out of the old school because he doesn’t follow the rules. He has to go to this camp. In the camp it is really hard to pass. If he passes he will get back into the school. When he goes to talk to the principal he realizes that the old principal retired and the rude secretary is now the new principal. Plus, her sister is now the secretary. Her sister is also rude. Rafe’s luck is bad. So if you want to know more, then go read the book. If you don’t believe me, then read all the other books in the series. Just see how bad Rafe’s luck really is.

Counting by 7s written by Holy Goldberg Sloan is a delightfully quirky story about a girl named Willow. On the front cover of the book is a quote, "If you're lost, you might need to swim against the tide." Willow Chance certainly begins this story quite lost. She is an oddball in a new school where she is struggling to fit in. To make matters worse, her teacher thinks she cheated on a standardized test. Life only gets harder for Willow after she is sent to see the school guidance counselor, Dell Duke, and shortly afterward a terrible tragedy strikes her family. Willow has to rely on the kindness of strangers, but in her own very unique way, she ends up giving back to everyone who helps her. I loved Willow's personality! She is brilliant and sensitive and a great role model for kids struggling to be comfortable with their own differences.

Doll Bones by Holly Black

Doll Bones by Holly Black is one of the 2014 Newbery Honor books and a wonderfully creepy ghost story.  I loved this book.  I'm a big fan of ghost stories and this is a well told tale with plenty of adventure and suspense. The book is about three friends, Poppy, Alice and Zach.  The three enjoy playing an imaginative storytelling game together, but Zach's father feels that Zach is too old for this now that he is in middle school and tries to put an end to his play.  In their imaginative game, a china doll in Poppy's mother's cabinet plays the role of a sinister queen.  The creepy looking doll becomes the center of the story when Poppy dreams that the doll is possessed by a young girl and needs to be buried so that the ghost can rest.  Until it is buried, Poppy warns that the ghost will haunt the three friends.  Is there truth to Poppy's assertions, or is Poppy just trying to get Zach to play the game again?  Zach doesn't know what to believe until...  Yeah, you know, read it and find out.

Liar and Spy by Rebecca Stead

Liar and Spy by Rebecca Stead is the third of Stead's books.  I've read the other two, Light, and the Newbery Medal winner, When You Reach Me.  I enjoyed both, but I think Liar and Spy may have just become my favorite.  Stead does a great job creating a cast of very quirky characters.  They instantly become very real to the reader and you care about their struggles.  The story takes place in Brooklyn, NY and alternates between a school setting and an apartment building.  The main character, Georges, has just moved from the home he grew up in, to an apartment nearby because his father was laid off from his job.  As Georges struggles with the bullies in school, his loner status, and his mother's absence, he is distracted by his funny new neighbor Safer.  They start a Spy Club together and begin to keep an eye on one of the mysterious tenants in the apartment building where they live.

I truly loved the characters in this book and Stead does such a masterful job at creating a story line steeped in mystery, that I hesitate to say much about the plot.  I'll just say that there is mystery, danger, friendship, spies, humor and sadness all rolled together in a great story.  Liar and Spy is one of the 2014 RICBA Award Nominees.  You still have time to read it and see if it would get your vote!

The book gives a few life lessons that I really liked. This reminds me of the difficulties of school and how I'm pulling through. One of the life lessons is to be kind to others and people will be kind to you. In other words, treat people the way you want to be treated. Sometimes I get bullied in school by a person that shall not be named, but I have my friends to help me, just like the protagonist in this book.

He goes to school for the first time and he has to face all the struggles of school and bullies because he is different. It is very difficult for him in the beginning since people at public school aren't used to having someone as different as him there. Read the story to find out more and get a touching feeling in your heart. I really like this book because it is a touching story and really hits a soft part of your heart. It is so meaningful and you should truly read it. Wonder is emotional and is such a great story with great details you just want to keep reading.

Auggie is a boy who has a not so normal face. His face looks a little weird. but other than that he has some good friends and keeps his Friendships! Wonder was a good book to read. I really think this was really helpful for friendship and bullying. I really think people should read for help on bullying and to not judge people on the way they look on the outside, but what they are like on the inside.

Will Auggie continue going to a public school or will he have his mom homeschool him again?

I like this story because it gives me many different feeling as I read it. It made me feel happy, sad, confused, angry, and excited.  I can relate to Via, the older sister because my brother just started school too. He’s in kindergarten but he doesn’t have a facial deformity. Because he just started school, we tend to focus on him more. This doesn’t really bother me as much as it bothers Via though. In Wonder by R.J. Palacio, there's a kid named August with a deformed face. He's been homeschooled all his life because of all his surgeries. His doctor says he doesn't need anymore surgeries for a couple years. His mother is making him go to school this year. He likes the school but there are some issues along the way. Read more to learn about how August survives his new school!
I enjoyed this book because of how it grabbed me and I just couldn't let it go. The story was told by different points of view. I liked August's point of view the most. August is a really nice kid. This book is kind of like the movie A Girl Like You because she gets bullied but keeps it inside. August gets bullied and doesn't tell anyone.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a fantastic book!  I would go so far as to say it should be required reading for every sixth grade student in both of my schools.  I'm hoping that many of my faculty members will put this book on a list as their next read aloud for their classes.  R.J. Palacio writes from the point of view of different children throughout the book and manages to accurately capture each person's feelings and voice.

Okay, by now you probably want to know what this book is about...  Wonder is a book about a boy who is born with a genetic abnormality that causes his face to be deformed.  His name is August, and through his voice we get to see the world from his point of view.  We learn about how he ignores the staring looks of strangers and the way they avoid touching him.  But we also learn how August has a kindness in him that lets him understand and forgive people.  Read this book and put yourself in the shoes of each of the unforgettable characters in the story.  You will learn some things about them, and about yourself in the process.
